Young Christ in the Temple Giovanni Serodine (c. 1625)

A lesser-known Caravaggesque figure, Serodine portrays the young Jesus in discussion with the doctors of the law in the temple of Jerusalem (Luke 2:46). Painted around 1625, the work uses theatrical lighting and strong chiaroscuro to emphasize Christ’s early wisdom. The doctors appear struck by the depth of his answers, while Mary and Joseph, depicted in the upper right corner, reflect on the miraculous moment. The composition, intimate and innovative, reflects a dialogue between religious scholarship and Caravaggesque visual intensity.
